Matt Johnson was named the third head coach in AIC women's soccer history on December 12, 2005. He also serves as the College's Assistant Athletic Director where he is primarily responsible for NCAA compliance and eligibility, as well as marketing and assisting with Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and CHAMPS/Life Skills activities on campus
A native of Holyoke, Mass., Johnson played at
Northeast-10 rival Merrimack College from 1996-99 and was a
two-time NE-10 All-Conference selection, garnering First Team
honors in 1998. In 2000 Johnson, a Business
Administration-Finance major, received the ECAC/Robbins Division
II
Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, where he was selected from
a pool of 7,000 candidates in Division II. He also
participated in the 2000 NEISCA All-Star Game as a senior. Johnson
played varsity soccer for four years at Holyoke Catholic High
School, serving as team captain as a senior, and graduated from
HCHS in 1996. He was also a two-year member of the
Massachusetts state team that participated in the Northeast
Regional Tournament in 2001-02.
Johnson returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for the men’s program in 2004, where he helped the Warriors to a 13-5-1 record after Merrimack was 5-9-4 the year before. Prior to that, he served as the co-head coach at South Hadley (Mass.) High School where he helped the team turn into a playoff contender. Johnson holds a National Coaching Certificate from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Johnson, earned his Master’s in Athletic Administration from Springfield College in 2004, has been AIC’s assistant athletic director since June, 2005. Prior to his arrival at AIC, Johnson served a year as the External Affairs Coordinator in the athletic department at UMass Lowell.
