Rindge, N.H. – The American International College women’s soccer team rallied from a late 2-0 deficit to tie second-ranked and 2007 national runner-up Franklin Pierce Tuesday night at Sodexo Field. Sophomore forward/midfielder
Sarah Boornazian (Farmington, Conn.) scored twice in the final 5:44 to send the match into overtime.
The match was scoreless through the first 58 minutes until junior midfielder Gabriela Demoner (Curitiba, Brazil) put the Ravens, who are ranked No. 1 in the East Region by the NSCAA, off a feed from sophomore forward Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden). Franklin Pierce extended its lead to 2-0 on senior midfielder Kelly Sisco’s (Hubbardston, Mass.) second marker of the season with 9:30 remaining in regulation. She was able to get senior keeper
Danielle Hodecker (West Springfield, Mass.) to misread the direction of the shot after receiving a pass from Demoner, who was credited with an assist on the play.
The Yellow Jackets, who are ranked 10th in the NSCAA East Region rankings, did not give in and continued to pressure the Ravens. That pressure paid off in the form of two Boornazian goals in a span of 2:42 to tie the game and eventually send it to overtime.
Her fist goal came with 5:44 left on the clock as she redirected a crossing pass from junior midfielder
Morgan Mastronardi (Corunna, Ont.) off her chest and past senior keeper Brittany Ester (Toms River, N.J.) to cut AIC’s deficit in half at 2-1. She tied the game just over two and a half minutes later when she accepted a pass from sophomore forward
Cassie Ashwell (Agawam, Mass.) and placed a low shot just inside the left post from 18 yards out with 3:02 left in regulation.
Franklin Pierce dominated the play in both overtime periods and outshot AIC 6-0, but couldn’t beat Hodecker, who made two of her 10 saves in the extra frames. Exter made just one save on three Yellow Jacket shots on goal.
The Ravens outshot AIC 22-6 in the game and held a 7-0 advantage in the first half, but only outshot the Yellow Jackets 9-6 in the second frame. The Ravens also had the only two corner kicks of the game, both of which came in the first half, and had 10 fouls to AIC’s six.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Thursday when they travel to Post for a non-conference match beginning at 4 p.m.
