Second-Seeded Adelphi Tops Seventh-Seeded AIC, 3-1

Lowell, Mass. – The seventh-seeded American International College women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to second-seeded Adelphi University in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Northeast-10 Championship Tournament, hosted by UMass Lowell. Redshirt freshman Taila de Souza (Cunupia, Trinidad & Tobago) posted a match-high 25 kills and 16 digs to lead the Yellow Jackets.

AIC (23-10) struggled at first as it dropped the first set 25-12 and got off to a slow start in the second before a rallying late to pull within 24-20, but lost that set as well, 25-20. The next two sets were as close as they could get, with the Yellow Jackets taking the third set, 29-27, and the Panthers (26-8) taking the fourth set, 26-24.

Adelphi had three players reach double-digits in kills. Freshman outside hitter Chelsea Overholt (Centrevilla, Va.),put down 18 kills, while junior outside hitter Hilary Pavels (North Woodmere, N.Y.) registered a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs.

Senior middle blocker Kelsey Hackett (Alta Loma, Calif.) added 13 kills with one error in 27 attempts for a .44 hitting percentage. Junior setter Heather Mau (Honolulu, Hawaii) tallied 48 assists and senior libero Amy Williams (Bloomington, Ind.) notched a match-high 30 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Ellisha Terry (Fort Worth, Texas) recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 21 digs for the Yellow Jackets and junior middle blocker Keziah Kashouh (West Warwick, R.I.) had nine kills. Sophomore setter Kervelle Redhead (St. James, Trinidad & Tobago) handed out a match-high 54 assists and 11 digs and junior libero Kambryn Williams (Pomona, Calif.) registered 27 digs.

AIC will find out if it is selected for the NCAA Championship Tournament when the selections are posted Sunday at 9 p.m. on NCAA.com.
