Yellow Jackets Tamed by Huskies, Lose 3-1

STORRS, Conn. – The American International College men’s hockey lost Friday night 3-1 at Connecticut. With the loss the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-4-1 this season and to 1-2-1 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Huskies find first victory and improve to 1-6-0 for the year and to 1-3-0 in the conference.

UConn got on the scoreboard first when freshman defenseman Alex Gerke (Tomah, Wisc.) found the back of the net at 17:36 of the opening period, with assists from junior Matt Miller (Bayonne, N.J.) and freshman Jim Gallagher (Marquette, Mich.).

The Huskies went up 2-0, 10-minutes into the second period when junior forward Jeff Sapieha (Calgary, Alb.) buried his first goal of the season with assists from classmate Matt Turner (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Miller. AIC cut the UConn lead to 2-1 when freshman forward Adam Pleskach (Beausejour, Man.), the AHA Rookie of the Month, tallied his team leading sixth goal of the season, unassisted at 11:03 of the period.

UConn added an empty-net goal with less than a minute remaining in the game for the 3-1 victory.

Freshman Ben Meisner (Halifax, N.S.) stopped 27 shots for the Yellow Jackets, while counterpart, classmate Jeff Larson (Baldwin, Mo.) made 26 saves to claim the first victory of his collegiate career.
