GORHAM, Maine – The American International College wrestling team placed second out of eight teams at the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by the University of Southern Maine. Senior
Sam Gauvine (Enfield, Conn.), junior
Yaakov Bloch (Ashkelon, Israel), and freshman
Ronnie Tetreault (Ludlow, Mass.) each were champions in their respective weight classes for the Yellow Jackets.
In the 133 lbs. class, freshman
West Johnson (Meriden, Conn.) went 4-1 overall finishing in third place. He claimed victories over Bee Vang (MIT) and sophomore Kevin Constantine (Winchester, Mass.) of Trinity (Conn.). Johnson beat both in the champions bracket and then again in the 3rd place bracket.
At 141 lbs., freshman
Chris Hoffman (Aberdeen, Md.) went 3-1, also finishing in third place overall. He recorded wins over sophomore Cinjin Geowey (Pittsfield, Maine) of Southern Maine, junior Pat Cassella (Merrimack, N.H.) of Plymouth State University. Hoffman beat Geowey for the second time on the day in the 3rd place final.
Gauvine went 3-0 on the day, winning the championship at the 149 lbs. weight class. He tallied wins over freshman Tony Decato (Winsted, Conn.) of WNEC, freshman Peter Bronder (North Berwick, Maine) of Plymouth State, and freshman Femi Wheeler (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) also of Plymouth State.
Tetreault went 2-0 on the afternoon, claiming the 157 lbs. championship, recording wins over Stephen Lauzon (New Bedford, Conn.) of WNEC and Nicholas Stewart (Sharon, Mass.) of Trinity (Conn.).
At the 184 lbs. weight class, Bloch claimed the championship, going 3-0. He beat Alex Holland (Alfred, Maine) of Southern Maine, Rob Phillips (Brick, N.J.) of Plymouth State, and Chukwuemeka Kanu (Bronx, N.Y.) of Trinity (Conn.).
Also performing well on the day for AIC were sophomore
Josh Rollins (Woburn, Mass.) who went 2-2 at the 125 lbs. class, junior
Jason Pagan (Norwich, Conn.) who went 3-1 at the 174 lbs. class, and freshman
Travis Koch (Hampton, Conn.) who went 3-2 at 285 lbs.
