SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Caldwell College took a pair of extra inning games against the American International College softball team Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match-up, winnings game-one 2-1 in 12 innings and game-two 8-5 in nine innings. The Cougars improved to 29-11-2 for the season, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 20-18.
Game-one was a true pitchers duel as it remained score less until the 10th when the international tiebreaking rule went into effect. Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the inning when junior first baseman Brittni Frantellizi (Binghamton, N.Y.) scored from third on a sac fly from senior second baseman Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, N.J.) after starting the inning on second base and AIC answered in the bottom half of the frame when junior left fielder
Nicole Benoit (Walpole, Mass.) scored from third as freshman center fielder
Ashleigh St. Peter (Gill, Mass.) grounded out to second.
The Cougars scored the game-winning run in the top of the 12th when sophomore right fielder Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, Pa.) scored on a sac fly from freshman center fielder Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, R.I.). The Yellow Jackets had their chances to win in extra innings. Freshman designated player
Sarah Calgreen (Stratford, Conn.) was thrown out at the plate in the 10th and AIC loaded the bases in the 11th and 12th, but was unable to tie the game or take home the win.
Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn McFarlane (Secaucus, N.J.) earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief of sophomore pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, Calif.), who allowed one unearned run and scattered eight hits in 10 innings. Senior pitcher
Ashley Deegan (Durham, Conn.) was outstanding for the Yellow Jackets, but took the loss after going the distance and throwing 162 pitches. She allowed two unearned runs and scattering eight hits in 12 innings of work.
Caldwell jumped out to a 3-0 in the first on an RBI-single from Capardi and a two-RBI double off the bat of sophomore designated player Annie Forte (Toms River, N.J.), but AIC got one run back in the bottom half of the frame when senior shortstop
Deanna Zanetti (Hampden, Mass.) scored on a single from Calgreen.
The Yellow Jackets then scored three times in the third on a two-run single from Calgreen, who later scored on a single from junior designated player
Katie Elie (Worcester, Mass.). The lead stood until the top of the seventh when freshman Rebecca Ashley (Bellingham, Mass.) scored as a pinch runner on an infield single from Forte to once again send the game into extra innings. The Cougars then broke the game open in the top of the ninth with four runs to secure the win.
AIC was in a position to win the game in the seventh as Zanetti led off the innings with a single and advanced to third with just one out, but McFarlane was able to keep the Yellow Jackets off the board. She allowed one run in six innings of relief to earn her second win of the afternoon. Freshman pitcher
Kristen Dolan (Norwood, Mass.) took the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, in 5.1 innings of relief.
AIC will next host a Northeast-10 doubleheader against Pace Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Groff Field.
