Williamstown, Mass. – Freshman heavyweight
Casey Hines (Starke, Fla.) registered an 8-4 win to break an 18-18 tie and give the American International College wrestling team a 21-18 victory at Williams College Wednesday night. The Ephs are ranked 18th in the latest NWCA Division III Coaches’ Poll.
The Yellow Jackets got off to a slow start, dropping each of the first three bouts as they fell behind 12-0.
Este Lara dropped a 4-2 decision to Josh Mattana at 125 and
Brian Clay was edged by Kaison Tanabe, 9-6, at 133. Ces Antista then pinned
Anthony Cartright 1:01 into the second period at 141 before AIC posted five straight victories to take an 18-12 lead.
Sam Gauvine got the rally started with a 16-6 major decision over Anthony Miceli at 149 and
Ronnie Tetreault followed with a 3-2 win at 157 against Carl Breitenstein. Martin Thonpson then edged Jon Foster at 165, 4-3, before
Jason Pagan posted a 23-7 technical fall over Mir Henglin at 174.
Yaakov Bloch capped the rally with a 7-3 win over Andrew Gatewood at 184.
Ryan Malo got the Ephs back in the win column when he pinned
Wausa Onigbanjo in 2:29 at 197 to tie the team score at 18. Hines then gave AIC the dual win when he doubled up Colin Curzi at 285, 8-4.
The Yellow Jackets will next compete at Millersville's Shorty Hitchcock Invitational Sunday.
