Easton, Mass. – The American International College women’s basketball team dropped a 66-54 Northeast-10 contest at Stonehill College Wednesday evening at Merkert Gymnasium. The Skyhawks, who are receiving votes in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, improved to 15-4 overall and 10-2 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 6-11 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
The two teams traded the lead several times in the first half and AIC was up 17-16 after a layup from senior forward
Sasha Lowery (Paterson, N.J.) with 9:14 left in the first half, but Stonehill regained the lead for good when senior guard Megan Methven (Corning, N.Y.) knocked down a three 42 seconds later.
That three triggered a 7-0 run for the Skyhawks, who led 31-27 at the half. Stonehill opened the second frame with a 13-4 run that was capped by a three from junior guard Emily Rousseau (Biddeford, Maine) 4:38 into the period, giving the Skyhawks a 44-31 lead. Stonehill pushed that 16 after senior forward/center Kelsey Simonds (Middleboro, Mass.) converted a layup to make it a 62-49 advantage with 2:35 to go in the contest.
The Yellow Jackets used a 7-1 run that was capped by a three from senior guard
Kristin Boesenberg (Pocono Pines, Pa.) to pull back within nine with 59 seconds to go, but that was as close as AIC would get as Stonehill went 3-for-4 at the line in the closing minute for the 66-54 final.
Rousseau scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Skyhawks. She went 7-of-12 from the field, 3-for-5 from three and 6-for-7 at the line. Methven added 18 points and four assists, while Simonds notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.
Junior guard
Adriana Johnson (Tobyhanna, Pa.) scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead AIC, which has now lost three straight. Boesenberg netted 11 points with three boards, while sophomore forward
Rhea Pascal (Pickering, Ont.) added nine points with five boards.
Stonehill shot 38 percent (19-50) from the field and 44.4 percent (8-18) from beyond the arc, while the Yellow Jackets shot 32.8 percent (21-64) from the field and 26.1 percent (6-23) from three.
AIC will next host top-ranked and undefeated Franklin Pierce University Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Butova Gymnasium.
