SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College women's basketball team shot just 29.5 percent (18-61) from the field and 17.6 percent (3-17) from three in a 65-44 loss to top-ranked Franklin Pierce University Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 contest.
The Ravens, who are ranked No. 1 in this week’s ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, remained undefeated as they improved to 17-0 overall and 13-0 in the NE-10. The Yellow Jackets dropped to 6-12 overall and 4-9 in conference play with their fourth straight loss.
Franklin Pierce opened the game with a 12-2 run and never looked back as it held a 33-18 advantage at the half and led by as many as many as 25 at 57-34 with 5:58 to go in the game.
Sophomore guard
Marie Li Sicard (Montreal, Que.) scored 11 points with five rebounds and two assists to lead AIC. Junior guard
Adriana Johnson (Tobyhanna, Pa.) had eight points with six rebounds, three assists and two steals, while sophomore guard
Michelle Lafond (Holyoke, Mass.) netted seven points with five boards.
Senior guard/forward Johannah Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England) scored a game-high 17 points with eight rebounds, five steals and four assists to lead the Ravens. She entered the game averaging 26.1 points per contest, which leads all players in the Division II.
Junior center Tori Ahrens (East Greenwich, R.I.) added 10 points with six boards for Franklin Pierce. Junior guard Cynthia Gaudet (Coventry, R.I.) and freshman forward Amanda Saab (Windham, N.H.) contributed eight points each.
The Ravens shot 40 percent (20-50) from the field and 76 percent (19-25) from the line and scored 18 points off 19 Yellow Jackets turnovers. AIC scored nine points off 15 Franklin Pierce turnovers and was just 5-14 from the line.
The Yellow Jackets will try to get back in the win column Tuesday when they travel to Saint Michael’s for a 5:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
