Williamstown, Mass. - The American International College wrestling team opened the 2010 portion of its schedule with a fifth-place finish at the eight-team Williams Invitational Tuesday. Junior
Jason Pagan (Norwich, Conn.) won the 174 bracket, while six other Yellow Jackets placed in the top-four.
Pagan, who was seeded eighth pinned Southern Maine’s Curt Hill in 4:15 and then majored top-seeded Curtis Barber of Suimpson 14-5 to advance to the semifinals, where he pinned fourth-seeded Drew Gatewood of Williams in 2:15. He then notched a 9-3 decision of over second-seeded Zach Bates of Bridgewater State in the first-place match.
Senior
Yaakov Bloch (Ashkelon, Israel) was seeded fourth at 184 and placed third. He opened with a 5-4 win over Bridgewater State’s Mike Aiken before pinning Southern Maine’s Nick Laurino in 2:36 and then falling to top-seeded Nate Shippee of Williams in the semifinals, 3-1. Bloch then posted 9-3 wins over Aiken and Southern Maine’s James LaMarca in the consolation bracket.
Junior
Ronnie Tetreault (Ludlow, Mass.), who was seeded fifth, placed third at 157. He pinned sixth-seeded Wade Dowling of Simpson in 4:15 after a first-round bye before falling to second-seeded Frank Cammisa of Bridgewater State in the semifinals, 8-3. Tetreault rebounded to earn a 5-2 decision over fourth-seeded Mike Willey of Plymouth State and then earned a 4-2 decision over Southern Maine’s Cody Byrd, who was seeded fifth.
Senior
Martin Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) placed third at 165 after being seeded seventh. He registered a 13-2 major decision over Plymouth State’s Matt Moher before dropping a 4-2 decision to second-seeded Kyle Rodgers of Roger Williams. Thompson then defeated Bridgewater State’s Steve Ciaccio 6-3 and Plymouth State’s Carter 6-2 before earning a 7-3 decision sixth-seeded Ethan Raymond of Bridgewater State.
Senior
Jeff Haddad (Old Saybrooke, Conn.) placed fourth at 141 in his first action of the season. He opened with a 4-2 win over Norwich’s Nick Monaco after receiving a first round bye before falling in the semifinals to eight-seeded Cinjin Goeway of Southern Maine, 4-3. Haddad then notched an 8-4 win over Roger Williams’ Chris O’Shea, who was seeded sixth, in the consolation semifinals before falling 4-2 Williams’ Dylan Rittenburg, who was the top seed, in the third-place match.
Freshman heavyweight
Travis Koch (Hampton, Conn.) placed fourth after being seeded sixth. He won three straight bouts after falling to third-seeded Colin Curzi, 4-3, in the championship bracket, earning a 7-6 win over Simpsons’ Sam Collora, who was seeded fifth, a 10-3 win over Bridgewater State’s Sam Fritz and a 7-3 win over fourth-seeded Raistlin Delisle of Norwich. Koch was then majored by Simpson’s Taylor Stroud 9-0 in the third-place match.
Freshman
Brian Clay (Sheffield, Mass.) pinned Williams’ Chris Simmons in 1:50 and then earned an 11-4 decision over second-seeded Ken Francis of Bridgewater State before getting pinned by Williams’ Ces Antista, who was seeded third, in 0:17 in the 133 semifinals.
AIC will return to Williams for a dual match with the Ephs January 12 at 6 p.m.
