New Haven, Conn. - Junior guard Dominique Stellmacher (New Britain, Conn.) knocked down a three with just 0.6 seconds left on the clock to give the University of New Haven a 46-45 Northeast-10 victory over the American International College women's basketball team Wednesday night.
The Chargers improved to 10-11 overall and evened their conference record at 8-8, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 7-14 overall and 5-11 in the NE-10.
AIC led 45-43 after junior guard
Adriana Johnson (Tobyhanna, Pa.) drove to the basket and converted a layup with six seconds on the clock before Stellmacher pushed the ball up the court and hit a running three-pointer with less than a second on the board.
The Yellow Jackets were down by three, 37-34, with 4:44 to go before going on a 9-2 run to take a 43-39 lead. Senior forward
Sasha Lowery (Patrerson, N.J.), who netted six points with 12 boards and two blocked shots, capped the run when she drained a pair of free throws with 1:05 to go in the contest.
Freshman guard Jasmine Hardy (Meriden, Conn.) answered with two free throws of her own with 32 seconds to go and Stellmacher tied the game when she canned a jumper off a Lowery turnover 11 seconds later.
Johnson score 12 points with four rebounds, three assists and three steals for AIC. Sophomore guard
Michelle Lafond (Holyoke, Mass.) added eight points with three boards and two steals off the bench.
Stellmacher finished with a game-high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead New Haven, senior guard Helin Marte (Woodhaven, N.Y.) fell just short of a triple-double, scoring nine points with 12 boards and eight assists before fouling out. Hardy also scored nine points.
The Chargers pulled out the win despite shooting just 27.9 percent (17-61) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-18) from three and 53.3 percent (8-15) from the line. The Yellow Jackets shot 37.2 percent (16-43) from the field, 16.7 percent (2-12) from three and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the line.
AIC opened the game with an 11-2 run over the first 6:27 and led 18-9 after Lafond drained a three with 8:55 to go in the first half. The Chargers pulled back within one, 23-22, on a pair of Marte free throws with 48 seconds to go in the first half and held the lead for most of the second frame.
The Yellow Jackets will next host the College of Saint Rose Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
