SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College wrestling team registered wins over Springfield College, Springfield Technical Community College and host Western New England College to capture the 2010 City of Springfield Championship. The Yellow Jackets improved their dual record to 9-7 with the three wins.
AIC opened with a tightly contested 21-16 win over Springfield, which was decided when freshman heavyweight
Casey Hines (Starke, Fla.) pinned Ron Fusco in just 47 seconds. The Yellow Jackets then dominated WNEC, 39-3, and STCC, 42-3, and had three grapplers go 3-0.
Senior 133
Jeff Haddad (Old Saybrook, Conn.) took a 14-7 decision from Springfield’s Eddie Giron before registering a 9-8 six-overtime win over WNEC’s Anthony Medina. He ended the night by pinning STCC’s Ernesto Ornelas in 6:15.
Junior 141
Danny Whitenak (Baltimore, Md.) pinned his first two opponents before notching a 14-6 major decision over STCC’s Tyler Wong. He stuck Springfield’s Kevin Moss in 3:59 and WNEC’s Nik Moreschi in 52 seconds. Senior
Martin Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) defeated Springfield’s Tyler LeBlanc 12-10 and WNEC’s Travone Logan 14-6 at 174 before getting a win by forfeit at 165 against STCC.

Travis Koch (Hampton, Conn.) pinned WNEC’s Victor Rivera in 5:51 and classmate
Austin Morris (Clay, N.Y.) earned an 11-7 win over STCC’s Brian Sullivan in addition to Hines’ win against the Pride.

Sam Gauvine (Enfield, Conn.) rebounded from a 3-2 loss to Springfield’s Sam McGilvray at 149 to pin WNEC’s Tom Caliento in 4:23 and defeat STCC’s Juan Flores 14-10 at 149. Junior 184
Yaakov Bloch (Ashkelon, Israel) earned a 10-4 decision over Springfield’s Jeremy Burns and majored WNEC’s Matt Mangelli 14-3 before dropping a 9-8 decision to STCC’s George Hargrove.

Este Lara (Avon, Conn.) was a 10-4 winner over WNEC’s Robbery Ferrente and a 4-0 winner over STCC’s Chad Roberts after dropping an 8-6 decision to Springfield’s Michael Rose. Sophomore
Ronnie Tetreault (Ludlow, Mass.) won an 18-5 major decision over WNEC 165 Matt Rahman and pinned STCC 157 Kikos Kalaitzidis in 4:32 after falling to Springfield 157 John Archambeau.
AIC will next compete in a quad-match February 12 at Trinity (Conn.) College with Bridgewater State University and Rhode Island College.
