Strong Defensive Effort Leads Women's Basketball Past Saint Rose, 60-44

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College women's basketball team held the College of Saint Rose to just 19.4 percent (6-31) shooting from the field and 11.1 percent (1-9) from three in the second half on its way to a 60-44 Northeast-10 victory Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets (8-14/6-11 NE-10) shot 42 percent (21-50) from the field, 42.9 percent (6-14) from three and 75 percent (12-16) in the game. The Golden Knights (11-11/10-7 NE-10) finished shooting 27.1 percent (16-59) shooting from the field and 13.3 percent (2-15) from three while going 10-for-16 at the line.

Senior guard Kristin Boesenberg (Pocono Pines, Pa.) scored a game-high 14 points, going 5-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-7 from three, with two assists, two rebounds and two steals to lead AIC. Junior guard Adriana Johnson (Tobyhanna, Pa.) scored 11 points with six assists.

Sophomore guard Michelle Lafond (Holyoke, Mass.) netted 10 points on a 4-for-8 performance from the floor while registering four assists and pulling down three boards. Sophomore forward Rhea Pascal (Pickering, Ont.) added nine points and seven boards.

Sophomore forward Ali Johnson (Falls Church, Va.) scored 11 points with eight boards and two blocked shots for Saint Rose. Sophomore guard Ashley Rath (Victor, N.Y.) also scored 11 points to go with five boards, while sophomore guard Adrianna Gaeta (Endicott, N.Y.) added nine points off the bench.

Lafond gave AIC a 25-21 lead when she knocked down a jumper with 4:41 to go in the first half, but the Golden Knights closed the period with a 9-0 run to take a 30-25 lead into the locker room.

The Yellow Jackets took control right out of the gate in the second half with a 16-2 run over the first 10:21 to open a 41-32 lead. AIC led by as many as 21 after junior guard/forward Josephine McLane (Freemont, Calif.) drained a three with 1:28 to go to make it a 60-39 contest.

AIC will next host Le Moyne College Tuesday night in a 5:30 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
