Box Score
Auburndale, Fla. - The American International College baseball team dropped a 7-3 decision to Assumption College Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Lake Myrtle Park. The Greyhounds improved to 6-3 for the season, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-5.
AIC got on the board first with a run in the top of the fourth. Junior designated hitter
Nicholas Devine (Springfield, Mass.) tripled with one out and then scored on junior right fielder
Kyle McNiff’s (Westford, Mass.) single. That lead didn’t last long as Assumption plated three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead for good.
The Greyhounds pulled away the next inning as each of the first three batters reached to setup a grand slam for junior shortstop Shawn Frigon (Worcester, Mass.) to give Assumption a 7-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets got two of those runs back on freshman catcher
Dan Fenton’s (Agawam, Mass.) triple, but that was as close as they’d get the rest of the way.
AIC had other opportunities to score but was unable to take advantage. Freshman shortstop
Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass.) was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Fenton’s triple in the sixth and the Yellow Jackets, left the bases loaded in the fourth and had two runners on with one or no outs twice but couldn’t cash in.
Senior Michael Colebrook (Leicester, Mass.) earned the win on the hill after allowing three runs on eight hits with eight Ks in six innings of work. Sophomore
Julian Concepcion (Woodstock Valley, Conn.) took the loss for AIC after giving up three runs in four innings.
Devine went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Yellow Jackets, while Fenton was also 2-for-4 with two runs driven in. Foley finished 1-for-4 with a grand slam to lead Assumption, while senior first baseman Tim Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
AIC will next battle Stonehill College Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Rollins College.
