BASEBALL POUNDS OUT 15 HITS IN 12-0 WIN OVER BRIDGEPORT
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 28, 2006)
– Tyler Cooke (Brattleboro, Vt.) went 2-3
with a double and four runs batted in and Terry
Loh (Milford, Conn.) allowed just one hit in five innings
of mound work as American International College pounded out 15 hits
in a 12-0 blanking of the University of Bridgeport in baseball
Tuesday afternoon at AIC Park. With the win AIC improves to 5-7
while the Purple Knights fall to 3-7 overall.
The 12 runs scored by the Yellow Jackets marks the most in a single game since a 12-9 win over Bentley on April 18, 2004.
Cooke, who also scored twice, drove in all four of his runs in the first three innings including a two-run double in the fourth. David Dest (Orange, Conn.) was 2-4 with a RBI and two runs scored in the leadoff spot, including a triple to start the game, while Jeff Rustico (Plantsville, Conn.) and Neal Quesnel (South Hadley, Mass.) were also each 2-4 at the plate with a run driven in. The top six in the AIC lineup were a combined 12-25 with eight runs batted in.
Jose Virelia (Arroyo, Puerto Rico) led Bridgeport with two hits, going 2-4 at the plate.
AIC scored all of its runs in the first six innings as it scored in each of the first six frames. Cooke drove Dest home after his leadoff triple in the first to make it 1-0, then the Yellow Jackets tacked on three more in the second, with Bryan Turney (Auburn, Mass.) scoring on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a single. Dest singled to score Chris Cali (Brockton, Mass.), while a sacrifice fly by Cooke would score Andrew Martirano (Yonkers, N.Y.).
After scoring again in the third, the Yellow Jackets scored five more times in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead, with AIC banging out five hits, including Cooke’s double with no one out that scored Martirano and Drew Kohl (Easthampton, Mass.). After Shock Johnson (Sarasota, Fla.) singled to score Cooke in the fifth, Martirano closed out the scoring with a one-out solo home run in the sixth, his first of the season.
On the mound, Loh did not allow a hit until Greg Gilbert (Riverside, N.J.) singled with two outs in the fifth. He struck out four and walked three in five innings before Patrick Salmon (Worcester, Mass.), Mike Lavato (Springfield, Mass.) and Dan Nugent (Cambridge, Mass.) combined for four innings of scoreless relief. Rick Persico (Old Bridge, N.J.) took the loss for the Purple Knights, allowing eight hits and eight runs (seven earned) in three-plus innings of work.
AIC returns to action Thursday when it travels
to C.W. Post for a non-league game kicking off at 3:00.
