OWLS PULL AWAY FROM BASEBALL LATE
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 14, 2007) - Chris Barile drove
in three runs and Edward Bethke allowed just six hits in a complete
game effort as visiting Southern Connecticut State scored six times
in the seventh and eighth innings to take a 9-4 Northeast-10
baseball victory over American International College at AIC Park
Saturday afternoon. The Owls improve to 11-22 and 7-8 in
NE-10 play while the Yellow Jackets are now 6-16 and 2-10 in the
league.
The Owls broke open a 4-3 game with five runs in the eighth inning. Billy Hite led off the inning with a single before Sean Finucane doubled to bring him home. The Owls took advantage of three straight Yellow Jacket errors, and Barile also had a sacrifice fly that scored Paul Izzo. Southern would plate its final run when Sean Morgan scored on a sac fly by Nick Czekaj.
AIC had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second courtesy of a two-run single by Dan Fey (Plymouth, Mass.) that scored David Dest (Orange, Conn.) and Jason Rustico (Plantsville, Conn.). After the Owls scored three times in the top of the third, the Yellow Jackets would knot the score at 3-3 when Jeff Rustico (Plantsville, Conn.) reached on a one-out single and later scored on an error.
The Yellow Jackets would plate a final run in the bottom of the ninth when Jason Rustico tripled and was brought in by Dominic Meattey (Fitzwilliam, N.H.).
Czekaj, Hite, Morgan and Michael Diaz all had two hits apiece for the Owls while Czekaj also recorded a pair of RBI. Barile was 1-3 at the plate but drove in two runs on sacrifice flies. Jason Rustico and Fey finished with two hits apiece for AIC, which was outhit 13-6.
Bethke went the distance on the mound for the Owls, scattering six hits while allowing three earned runs. John Stavola (Berlin, Conn.) took the loss for AIC, going the first seven frames and allowing 10 hits.
AIC is slated to return to action Tuesday when
it hosts Merrimack in a 3:30 contest at AIC Park.
