GOLDEN KNIGHTS EDGE BASEBALL 5-4
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 30, 2007) -
Freshman Chuck March (Southington, Conn.) led a
12-hit attack for American International College with a 3-4 day at
the plate but the Yellow Jackets dropped a 5-4 Northeast-10
baseball decision to The College of Saint Rose Monday
afternoon. The Golden Knights are now 13-27 overall and 10-15
in league play, while the Yellow Jackets are 8-27 and 4-21 in the
league.
Saint Rose rallied from an early 3-1 hole with three runs in the top of the seventh. After Mike Pagano worked a one-out walk, Chris Morrill would lace a ground-rule double to place runners at second and third. Pagano scored on a passed ball to tie the game 3-3, then Morrill scored on a groundout by Ryan Price. Victor Tolentino scored the eventual game-winning run when he came home on a single by John Cole.
The Yellow Jackets would get a run back in the bottom of the frame when David Dest (Orange, Conn.) reached on an error to open the inning and scored on a single by Kevin Farrell (Wilbraham, Mass.). AIC would load the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but Dest hit a sharp liner that was snared by Casey Deuel at second and Matt Rhodes (Charlestown, R.I.) popped out.
AIC took a 3-1 lead with a three-run fourth inning. Dest led off the inning with his second home run in as many outings. Rhodes would follow with a single and Bryan Turney (Auburn, Mass.) followed that with a double. Jason Rustico (Plantsville, Conn.) would plate Rhodes with a sac fly to left, while March would drive in Turney with a single to the gap in left-center.
Kevin Zuchorski worked six innings for Saint Rose, allowing 10 hits and fanning four, but picked up the win. Chris Cahill did not allow a hit in two innings of work to grab the save. Morrill, Cole and Dominick Iaconis had two hits apiece for the Golden Knights.
Nick Nobilt (Westfield, Mass.) took the loss for AIC, working 6.2 innings and scattering seven hits while fanning six. Nobilt would be hindered by five walks. In addition to March's three-hit effort that included a pair of doubles, Dest, Rhodes and Dan Fey (Plymouth, Mass.) each had two hits apiece for the Yellow Jackets. AIC outhit Saint Rose 12-8 but stranded 13 men on base.
AIC travels to Pace University Tuesday.
