BLOOMFIELD SWEEPS AIC BASEBALL

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 7, 2007) - Visiting Bloomfield College swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from American International College on Saturday afternoon at AIC Park.  The Deacons (11-14) posted a 10-7 win in the opener then blanked the Yellow Jackets (5-12) 3-0 in the second game.

            In the first game Bloomfield used a six-run fourth to stake itself to a 7-2 lead.  The Deacons would register six hits in the inning but also took advantage of five AIC errors.  The Yellow Jackets had taken a 2-1 lead the previous frame when Tyler Cooke (Brattleboro, Vt.) and Bryan Turney (Auburn, Mass.) both drove home runs.

            AIC would score three times in the sixth to close the gap to 7-6, with Cooke delivering a two-out single for the sixth run.  However, Bloomfield would score three more times in the top of the seventh to take a 10-6 lead.

            Turney and Kevin Farrell (Wilbraham, Mass.) each had a pair of hits in the opener as AIC was outhit 11-6.  Nicolas Cucchiarella was 3-4 with a pair of RBI for Bloomfield, while three other players had two hits apiece.  Ricky Maldonado allowed five hits in 5.1 innings of work to pick up the win for the guests, while John Stavola (Berlin, Conn.) worked the first 3.2 innings for AIC and took the loss.

            Bloomfield would score on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the top of the fourth of the nightcap to take a 1-0 lead with Cucchiarella scoring after reaching on a one-out single.  The Deacons would score two more times in the sixth when Randy Singer stroked a two-run double to make it 3-0.

            Cucchiarella and Manny Lopez each had a pair of hits for Bloomfield while Cooke was 2-4 at the plate for AIC in the nightcap.  Joseph O'Donnell fanned seven in a complete game effort to earn the win, while Patrick Salmon (Worcester, Mass.) worked the first four innings and scattered four hits for AIC to take the loss.

            AIC travels to Saint Rose on Tuesday.
