GAME 1 BOX SCORE GAME 2 BOX SCORE
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 31, 2007) - The
UMass Lowell baseball team swept a doubleheader from American
International College by scores of 10-0 and 3-0 Saturday afternoon
at AIC Park. The River Hawks improve to 12-10 overall and 7-1
in Northeast-10 play, while the Yellow Jackets are now 4-8 and 0-5
in the league.
The River Hawks broke open what had been a 1-0 game with six runs in the top of the fifth in the first game to take a 7-0 lead. UMass Lowell used four hits, as well as a pair of walks and an AIC error to score six times in the frame, with the big blow being Steve Paddock's two-run double that made it 4-0. The guests would score twice in the sixth on a Taylor VonKriegenburg single then would add another run in the seventh when Jerod Edmonsons's two-out triple plated Sean Patno.
Edmonson finished the first game 3-5 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Patno, Paddock and vonKriegenburg each added two hits as UML outhit AIC 11-1. Ryan Williams fanned five in seven innings of work to pick up the win. Kyle Paton (Westfield, Mass.) had AIC's lone hit, a single in the third. Nick Noblit (Westfield, Mass.) took the loss for AIC, going 4.1 innings and allowing seven runs while fanning three.
The guests plated a run in the top of the first of the nightcap when Patno worked a one-out walk and scored on a passed ball. The River Hawks would score two more times in the eighth courtesy of back-to-back RBI hits by Brendan Fullerton and Jared Notargiacomo to make it 3-0.
AIC had two prime chances to get on the board go by the wayside. In the fifth, Matt Rhodes (Charlestown, R.I.) led off the inning with a single followed by Kevin Farrell (Wilbraham, Mass.) getting hit by a pitch. After Jason Rustico (Plantsville, Conn.) bunted the duo over, two straight groundouts would leave them stranded. The Yellow Jackets would string together three hits in the eighth, but had two runners thrown out on the basepaths, including pinch-runner Dominic Meattey (Fitzwilliam, N.H.) at home plate.
Fullerton had three hits for UMass Lowell while Anthony Santos had a pair of hits. Peter Nickerson picked up the win, allowing five hits and fanning three in eight innings of work. Pat Donovan worked the final inning for his fifth save of the season. John Stavola (Berlin, Conn.) went seven innings on the hill for AIC, surrendering five hits and fanning two.
AIC and UML complete their season series Sunday
at UMass Lowell.
