FOOTBALL HOLDS OFF ASSUMPTION 21-14
WORCESTER, Mass.
(October 14, 2006)- Visiting American
International College opened up a 21-7 halftime lead and held off
Assumption College to post a 21-14 win Saturday afternoon in
Northeast-10 football at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The Yellow
Jackets snapped a two-game slide and improved to 4-2 overall and in
the Northeast-10, while the Greyhounds are now 3-4 overall and in
the league.
AIC got on the board on its first possession of the game for the third straight game at the 12:30 mark when Shane Murphy (Bogota, N.J.) found Marcus Cameron (Hempstead, N.Y.) on a 13-yard pass into the end zone to make it 7-0. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of a fumble by Assumption on their first play of the game, with Jason Dominique (Roselle, N.J.) forcing a fumble and Marcus Worilds (Carteret, N.J.) recovering at the Assumption 27.
The Yellow Jackets made it 14-0 with 8:59 left in the second quarter when Murphy capped an 11 play, 56 yard drive with a two-yard pass to tight end Dylan Barkoski (Burlington, Vt.). The big play on the drive was a 33-yard completion from Murphy to Travis Poole (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to get the guests to the Assumption 5. The Greyhounds responded with a 10 play, 47 yard drive capped by a two-yard run by Jarel Capers to make it 14-7 with 4:12 left before halftime.
Brian Kelly (Springfield, Mass.) blocked an Assumption punt at the Greyhound 3 with 39 seconds left in the first half, and Leon Mularski (Ivoryton, Conn.) would fall on the loose ball in the end zone to make it 21-7. AIC would get the ball back one more time before halftime when the kickoff went off a Greyhound player, but the Yellow Jackets couldn't get anything going.
After a scoreless third quarter, Assumption halved AIC's lead with 14:27 left in the fourth when Kevin L'Ecuyer's two-yard run capped a 12 play, 70 yard drive to make it 21-14. With 5:07 remaining, Assumption would take over on downs at its own 23. The Greyhounds would drive to the AIC 21, but a fourth-and-inches run was snuffed out by Brian Destephano (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Carlos Cataquet (Brockton, Mass.) with 1:58 left. The Yellow Jackets were then able to run out the clock.
Murphy was 11-21 through the air for 111 yards and a pair of scores while throwing one interception. Kertis Hussey (Paterson, N.J.) caught three balls for 46 yards. Marlon Beckles (Brooklyn, N.Y.) carried 30 times for 99 yards but was held scoreless for the first time in 2006. Assumption signalcaller Joe Correia was 10-18 through the air for 118 yards. The Greyhounds outgained the Yellow Jackets 264-216 for the day, but fumbled the ball three times.
Defensively, Cataquet led the Yellow Jackets with 11 tackles (six solo), including 1.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. Terrance Holley (Bronx, N.Y.) had two tackles for a loss and eight total tackles, while Dominique had five tackles and AIC's other sack. Dustin Zitzmann led Assumption with 13 tackles (2 solo).
AIC returns to action Saturday, October 21, when
it hosts Pace for Homecoming. Game time at John Homer Miller
