Field Hockey Grabs Second Win of the Season 2-1

Boxscore

Springfield, Mass. - Nicole Phelps (Nassau, NY) took a long distance feed from Chelsey Grogan (Greenfield, Mass.) just over fourteen minutes into overtime and punched in a goal that led American International College to a 2-1 overtime victory over Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 showdown Saturday afternoon.

The victory, in just the fourth contest of 2007, marks the first time in the program's 11-year history that AIC has ever beaten two Northeast-10 opponents on the road in the same season.  The win improves AIC to 2-2 overall and in the Northeast-10, matching their win total from all of 2006, while the loss drops Franklin Pierce to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the Northeast-10.

AIC held a 1-0 lead for a majority of the contest. Freshman Devyn Quigley (Oxford, Mass.) scored the Yellow Jacket's first goal after redirecting a rebound off of a shot that senior Jamie Anderson (North Attleboro, Mass.) took from the right post.

The Jackets held onto the 1-0 lead until the 54:52 mark in the second-frame when Ashley Abernethy scored for the Ravens after picking a loose ball out-in-front of the Yellow Jacket's cage and squeaking it pasted a helpless Cindy Armand (Danvers, Mass.).

Armand recorded eight saves en-route to her second victory of the year while Stephanie Howard turned away two shots in net for Franklin Pierce.

The game would remain tied and eventually turn to overtime where Phelps was able to slap her second goal of the season past Howard, giving the Yellow Jackets the win.

Next, AIC will travel to Merrimack College to take on the Warriors on September 12. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start.
