Ice Hockey Downs Holy Cross 3-2

Boxscore

West Springfield, Mass.  - Sophomore defensemen Frankie DeAngelis earned the game winning goal just over five minutes into the third period as the American International College ice hockey team grabbed a 3-2 comeback victory over The College of Holy Cross in an Atlantic Hockey match-up Tuesday evening. With the win the Yellow Jackets improve to 5-13-2 overall and 5-9-1 in the AHA. The loss drops the Crusaders to 5-7-6 overall and 4-6-3 in the AHA.

Coming into the game, Holy Cross held a 1-15-2 edge over AIC in the team's last 18 contests. The last Yellow Jacket victory came on January 19th of 2007. The Crusaders pulled out to a  2-0 lead in the first period, but gave up one goal in the second and two in the third, as AIC triumphed to their fifth victory of the year.

Holy Cross jumped out to a two goal first period lead, despite the Yellow Jackets reeling off three more opening stanza shots (13-10). Holy Cross freshman forward Jamie Jelinek notched his first collegiate goal six minutes into the game firing home a shot off of a feed from Matt Werry, who was positioned behind the net.

The Crusaders added another first frame score when Brian Gabriel launched a slap-shot from just inside the blue-line that trickled past AIC goalie Dan Ramirez (Rochester, N.Y.) and into the net. Joe Brock and Everett Sheen were both in on the assist.

AIC cut the deficit in half when freshman Tom Mele (Bronx, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the season flipping a quick wrist-shot past the shoulder of Roy fourteen minutes into the second period.

In the third, AIC turned up the tempo. McMillan tied the score at two after firing a wrist-shot past Roy twenty-two seconds in the final period. It was McMillan's eighth goal of the season; he currently leads the team in goals and points (17).

With the score tied, Frankie DeAngelis (Woodbridge, Ont.) took a slap-shot from the point and powered home the game winner. DeAngelis' goal was scored on the power-play and was assisted by defenseman Matt Woodard (St. Louis Park, MN) and forward Mark Pavli (Sarnia, Ont.).

The Crusaders threatened several more times but were unable to grab the equalizer as the Yellow Jackets came away with the 3-2 victory.

Dan Ramirez stopped 19 shots earning his fifth win of the season for AIC while Adam Roy turned away 37 shots in net for Holy Cross.

AIC will hit the road to take on Sacred Heart this weekend.
