SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 7, 2006)Jim Moore (Worcester, Mass.) totaled 29 points to lead No. 21 Saint Anselm College to a 83-75 win over American International College in Northeast-10 men’s basketball Tuesday night at Butova Gymnasium. The win, the fifth straight for the Hawks, improves them to 17-5 and 12-5 in the league, while the Yellow Jackets are now 11-12 and 7-11 in NE-10 play.

Moore tallied 20 of his 29 points in the second half and went 10-18 from the floor and 8-9 at the free throw line. Matt Cahill (Bridewater, Mass) totaled 17 points, connecting on three-three pointers, while Jim Holsworth (Bogota, N.J.) finished with 15 points and six assists for the Hawks. John Huggins (Philadelphia, Pa.) led AIC with 16 points, while freshman Vernon Dupree (Wilmington, Del.) matched his season-high with 13 points. Dexter Gregory (Paterson, N.J.) registered 12 points and eight boards while Jenar Harrison (Queens, N.Y.) added 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks.

AIC shot 58.6% in the first half as it led 40-37 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets never trailed in the opening 20 minutes and led 28-16 with 8:20 left in the first half on a Huggins three-pointer. Saint Anselm would use a 12-4 run over the next 4:53 to cut the lead to 32-30 on a conventional three-point play by Holsworth, but a 8-2 spurt by the Yellow Jackets made it 40-32 with 1:02 before halftime on a basket by Lucius Millinder (Belleville, N.J.). The Hawks scored the final four points of the stanza.

Saint Anselm nailed four straight three-pointers in a span of 3:06 early in the second half to take a 53-45 lead with 14:46 to go on a Moore trifecta. A Cahill three gave the Hawks their largest lead of the contest, 63-53, with 11:43 to play before the hosts used a 14-6 run capped by a Huggins layup with 7:19 on the clock to make it 69-67.

AIC trailed 73-71 with just over five minutes to play when Saint Anselm scored the game’s next six points, with a basket by Moore at the 2:05 mark giving the Hawks a 79-71 lead. AIC got the lead down to six on a basket by Gregory on AIC’s next possession, but Saint Anselm would make all four of its free throw attempts over the final 37 seconds to secure the victory. The Hawks shot 53.3% in the second stanza and canned seven of their 14 three-point attempts over the final 20 minutes.

AIC outrebounded Saint Anselm 32-30 but it was hampered by 17 turnovers that led to 21 Hawk points. Saint Anselm converted 13 of its 14 free throw attempts for the game while the Yellow Jackets were 7-9 at the stripe.

AIC travels to Saint Michael's for its final road game of the regular season Saturday.
