MEN’S BASKETBALL EDGED AT PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY 76-73

PHILADELPHIA (November 19, 2005)John Huggins (Philadelphia, Pa.) led four American International College players in double figures with 18 points, but host Philadelphia University edged the Yellow Jackets in men’s basketball 76-73 Saturday afternoon.  The Rams improved to 2-3 on the season, while AIC evened its record at 1-1.

AIC trailed 47-36 at halftime but opened the second half on a 12-3 run to cut the Philadelphia lead to two.  The Yellow Jackets held a 66-63 lead with just over four minutes left but Levi Winters would hit a three to tie the game.  The Rams would outscore the Yellow Jackets 10-7 the rest of the way.

Huggins also grabbed seven rebounds and notched four assists.  Jenar Harrison (Queens, N.Y.) was 7-10 from the floor and totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Magen McNeil (Philadelphia, Pa.) was 8-11 from the floor and finished with 16 points.  Dexter Gregory (Paterson, N.J.) was the other Yellow Jacket in double figures as he finished with 10 points.  Tayron Thomas, an All-American for the Rams last season, led Philadelphia with a game-high 26 points on 9-18 shooting.

The Yellow Jackets shot a blistering 56.3% in the second half and 53.1% for the game and held the hosts to 33.3% shooting in the second half after the Rams were 18-28 (64.3%) from the field in the opening 20 minutes.  AIC outrebounded Philadelphia 33-27 but got to the free throw line just three times on the afternoon.  The Rams went to the line 14 times and converted 13.

AIC opens home and Northeast-10 play Tuesday when it hosts 2005 Division II runnerup Bryant in a 7:30 contest at Butova Gymnasium.
