GREYHOUNDS RACE PAST MEN'S BASKETBALL 76-61
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 31, 2007) - Corey Diethorn
scored 22 of his 30 points in the second half as Assumption College
closed the game on a 10-0 run en route to a 76-61 Northeast-10
men's basketball victory over American International College at
Butova Gymnasium Wednesday night. The win improves the
Greyhounds to 10-12 overall and 8-9 in NE-10 play, while the Yellow
Jackets are now 11-10 and 9-7 in the league.
Diethorn finished 13-19 from the floor and was 9-12 from the field over the final 20 minutes. Pat Shea connected on 3-of-4 three-pointers and finished with 17 points, while Leroy Byron also drained a trio of trifectas and had nine points. Jeff Dosado (Montreal, Quebec) recorded all 14 of his points in the first half for AIC, which also got 14 points from Vernon Dupree (Wilmington, Del.). Magen McNeil (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Jenar Harrison (Queens, N.Y.) had nine points apiece.
Assumption trailed 37-30 at halftime but would outscore AIC 18-11 over the first 8:35 of the second half, a Mike Taft three with 11:25 left knotting the game at 48 apiece. The Greyhounds would take their first lead of the game at the 9:35 mark when Shea drilled a three to make it 53-51, but back-to-back baskets by Dupree gave AIC a 55-53 lead with 7:09 to play. The guests would then reel off the next nine points and a Byron three with 5:10 left made it 62-55.
AIC would get the lead down to five with 3:31 left when Lucius Millinder (Belleville, N.J.) sank a pair at the line to make it 66-61. Those would be the final points the hosts would get as Assumption shut out AIC the rest of the way. Diethorn would close the game out with a dunk with 15 seconds to play to account for the final.
American International jumped out to a 8-0 lead just over two minutes into the contest and did not trail at all in the first half. The Yellow Jackets used a 9-1 run capped by a Dosado basket with 2:52 left before halftime to take their largest lead of the game, 32-22. The ‘Hounds cut the lead to seven at the break when Mike Foti nailed a jumper to make it 37-30 at halftime.
Assumption shot a sizzling 60.7% (17-28) over the final 20 minutes and also outrebounded AIC 33-29, the first time in the last nine games the Yellow Jackets have been outrebounded. The Greyhounds also canned 10 of their 18 three-point attempts and were 10-12 at the free throw line. AIC was 6-8 beyond the arc and 7-12 at the charity stripe.
AIC returns to action Saturday when it travels
to Merrimack for a 3:00 contest.
