MEN'S SOCCER UNBEATEN STREAK COMES TO AN END
Manchester, N.H. (October 18, 2005) -- The Saint Anselm
men’s soccer team defeated American International
College, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon at Melucci Field.
The win brings the Hawks’ record to 6-5-3 (4-4-1 NE-10), while AIC falls to 7-5-2 (5-4-2 NE-10). AIC's five-game unbeaten streak, tied for the second-longest in school history, also came to a close.
AIC’s leading scorer Benard Kessie (Worcester, Mass.) opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the third minute of the game. With two minutes remaining in the half, Saint Anselm sophomore Jared Novinksi (Old Saybrook, N.Y.) scored to tie the game at one with Tim Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.) assisting.
The second half was highlighted by a physical, yet fast paced game. Hubbard added a goal of his own to send the Hawks up by one just 17 minutes into the second half. Two minutes later, the Yellow Jackets struck back with a goal off the foot of Akill Jules (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad).
The action on the field was back and forth before Saint Anselm senior Bruce Dietterle (Newmarket, N.H.) put the game away for good as he dribbled his way through three defenders and ripped a goal by AIC’s diving goalie Michael Murphy (Ithaca, N.Y.).
Murphy had four saves on the day, while Saint Anselm goalie Scott Johnson (Plymouth, Mass.) made five saves in the win.
American International returns
to action Saturday when it hosts Bryant at 11:00 am.
