MEN'S SOCCER RALLIES TO TOP NEW HAVEN
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October 19, 2006) - Chris Charles
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored with just under nine minutes remaining as
American International College rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to
post a 3-2 win over the University of New Haven in a non-conference
men's soccer match Thursday afternoon at Dodds Stadium. The
Yellow Jackets are now 8-7-2 overall, while the Chargers are 5-10-2
on the season.
Charles, who now leads the Yellow Jackets with 10 goals, including four game-winners, took a long pass from Norbert Dusza (Holyoke, Mass.), who found Charles in front of the New Haven goal. Charles then fired a shot past UNH keeper James Hilaire at the 81:12 mark for the eventual game-winning tally.
The hosts staked themselves to a 2-0 lead just over 18 minutes into the game via a pair of goals by Justin Fernandez, the first coming 55 seconds into the contest and the second coming at the 18:06 mark. American International would halve the lead at the 25:01 mark on a goal by Gustavo Duarte (Leominster, Mass.), with Charles Branche (Brooklyn, N.Y.) assisting. AIC then proceeded to tie the game 10:35 before halftime when Kyle Paton (Westfield, Mass.) scored his sixth goal of the season off a crossing pass from Chris Carrozza (Methuen, Mass.)
AIC keeper Matt Marcoux (Blackstone, Mass.) made nine saves en route to the win, while Hilaire made five stops for New Haven. The Chargers outshot the Yellow Jackets 17-14.
AIC wraps up its regular season Saturday with a
key Northeast-10 tilt at Bryant University. That match is
slated for a 7:00 start.
