SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 14, 2007) -
Teresa Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) went a combined
4-7 with four doubles and eight runs batted in as American
International College swept a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader
from The College of Saint Rose at Groff Field Saturday afternoon by
scored of 9-5 and 9-1 in five innings. The Yellow Jackets
improve to 11-19 overall and 5-7 in the Northeast-10 while the
Golden Knights are now 8-10 and 3-5 in the league.
In the first game, AIC rallied from a 5-3 deficit with a six-run sixth inning. Bonavita would tie the game at five when she drilled a two-run double to center that plated pinch runner Jen Gonyea (Springfield, Mass.) and Nicole Benoit (Brockton, Mass.). A slap single up the middle by Kayla Donnelly (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored Michelle Franey (Abington, Mass.) to make it 6-5, and two batters later, Kellie Brown (Gill, Mass.) would deliver a three-run home run to make it 9-5.
Bonavita and Donnelly each finished with two hits apiece in the opener as Bonavita also had a two-run double in the fourth that gave AIC a 3-2 lead before the Golden Knights responded with three runs in the fifth. Sara Puglisi (Amsterdam, N.Y.) picked up the win for AIC, fanning five while allowing nine hits in her complete game effort.
Danielle Encizo and Katie Wiemann each drove in a pair of runs for the Golden Knights in the opener.
AIC jumped all over the guests in the second game, scoring nine times in the first three innings, highlighted by a five-run second. Brittany Provost (Delanson, N.Y.) staked AIC to a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run home run to left. In the second Franey made it 3-0 with a single that plated Deanna Zanetti (Hampden, Mass.) before Bonavita delivered another two-run double. Brown would add a two-run double of her own later in the frame to make it 7-0. The Golden Knights would score in the top of the third but Bonavita's fourth two-run double of the afternoon in the third that scored Franey and Katelyn Elie (Worcester, Mass.) made it 9-1.
Brown and Bonavita each had two hits for AIC, which collected a total of eight hits in its four trips to the plate. Jaime Clark was 2-3 for Saint Rose and had the Golden Knights' lone RBI. Megan Nickerson (Greenfield, Mass.) picked up the win, scattering six hits over five innings while fanning three.
AIC hosts Stonehill in a 3:00 doubleheader on
Tuesday.
