SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 22, 2007) -
Tara DeMontier (Amesbury, Mass.) knocked in a
combined 10 runs as American International College swept a
non-league softball doubleheader from the University of New Haven
by scores of 5-2 and 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Groff Field.
AIC, which has won six out of its last eight, is now 15-21 overall,
while the Chargers are 20-16 on the season.
DeMontier, a junior, belted a pair of three-run home runs in the second game and also had an RBI double to give her seven runs batted in in the nightcap. In the first game, DeMontier gave the Yellow Jackets all the offense they would need in the first inning with a bases-loaded double that cleared the bases to make it 3-0. She finished the afternoon 4-6 at the plate.
In the opener, after AIC staked itself to a 3-0 lead on DeMontier's double, New Haven would cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the third. The Yellow Jackets would add a pair of insurance runs in the fourth. DeMontier led off the frame by reaching on an error and was brought in on a single by Deanna Zanetti (Hampden, Mass.). Zanetti would later come home on a single by Michelle Franey (Abington, Mass.).
Zanetti and Teresa Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) each had a pair of hits in the opener. Sara Puglisi (Amsterdam, N.Y.) took down the win for AIC, fanning five while scattering six hits in a complete game effort. Breanne Gleason took the loss for UNH.
AIC would once again jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, with DeMontier's first round-tripper of the game scoring Kayla Donnelly (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Kellie Brown (Gill, Mass.). Her second blast came two innings later, scoring Bonavita and Brown, and her fourth inning double that narrowly missed being her third home run of the game plated Donnelly to make it 7-0.
Donnelly and Ashley Deegan (Madison, Conn.) each had a pair of hits in the nightcap in addition to DeMontier's 3-3 performance. Megan Nickerson (Greenfield, Mass.) hurled her third straight shutout, all victories, for AIC, allowing six hits while striking out four. She has not allowed a run in her last 20 innings of work. Jessica Medina took the loss for the Chargers, but collected a pair of hits.
AIC returns to Northeast-10 play Tuesday when it
travels to UMass Lowell for a 3:00 twinbill.
