Tanguay (Lowell, MA) collectively batted 4 for 6 with a run as
UMass Lowell defeated American International College, 4-2 and 3-0,
Tuesday in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at River
View Field.
With the sweep, UML improved to 20-18 overall and 15-7 in the NE-10 entering Thursday’s regular season home finale against Assumption. AIC slipped to 15-23 overall and 7-11 in the Conference.
In the opener, Tanguay batted 2 for 3 with one run while junior 2B Julie Brodie (Chelmsford, MA) hit 2 for 3 with two RBI. Senior 1B Josselyn Mroz (Salisbury, MA) went 1 for 1 with two walks and one RBI.
Guanci helped the River Hawks break a 1-1 draw in the second inning with a two-run double which scored senior CF Vikki Guido (Winchester, MA) and senior C Melissa Hanafin (Burlington, MA).
AIC added a run in the fourth when junior 3B Tara DeMontier (Amesbury, MA) singled home junior CF Kayla Donnelly (Pittsfield, MA), who had reached on a single earlier. However, Mroz drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning to score Tanguay for the insurance.
Donnelly led the Yellow Jackets, hitting 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Senior P Kristen Mahoney (Burlington, MA)
improved to 11-7 as she allowed five hits, one earned run and one
walk while striking out seven. Freshman P Sara
Sweptson (Dallas, PA) took the loss to slip to 6-8,
scattering five hits, three runs (two earned) and a walk over three
innings. Megan Nickerson (Greenfield, Mass.)
worked a scoreless inning of relief to extend her
scoreless streak to 21 innings for the Jackets.
In the nightcap, Guanci (2 for 3, RBI, run) led four River Hawks
with two hits as UML scored three runs in the fourth inning and
held on for the shutout. Freshman 3B Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) went
2 for 3 with one RBI while Tanguay hit 2 for 3 and Guido 2 for 4.
Junior RF Teresa Bonavita (Agawam, MA) led AIC, hitting 2 for 4, extending her season-high hitting streak to 10 games.
Freshman P Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, NH) improved to 8-9, surrendering three hits and a walk while striking out five in five innings. Guido earned her second save of the year, hurling the final two innings.
The River Hawks broke a 0-0 drought when Guanci doubled to score sophomore SS Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA), who led off with a single. Hebert later singled to score Guanci and a fielder’s choice by Hanafin brought home Mroz.
AIC threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two out on a pair of errors, but a ground out sealed the win for UML.
AIC hosts Merrimack Wednesday.
