HOUNDS, YELLOW JACKETS HALVE SOFTBALL TWINBILL

GAME 1 BOX SCORE     GAME 2 BOX SCORE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 3, 2007) - Teresa Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) went a combined 4-7 at the plate as American International College split a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader with Assumption College Tuesday afternoon at Groff Field.  The Greyhounds, who played as the home team in both games as the twinbill was originally scheduled to be played in Worcester, took a 2-1 game one win before the Yellow Jackets took a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

AIC is now 8-14 and 2-2 in the NE-10 while the Greyhounds are 3-15 and 1-3.

In the second game, AIC got on the board in the top of the first when Bonavita reached on a one-out double and would score on a single by Kellie Brown (Gill, Mass.), who went 3-4 in the nightcap.  AIC picked up its second run in the fifth when Bonavita singled and eventually scored from second on a passed ball and an error to make it 2-0.

Up 2-1 in the seventh the Yellow Jackets would bang out five straight singles en route to three insurance runs, which proved beneficial as the Greyhounds would plate one more in the bottom of the frame when Sarah Leary led off with a walk and scored on a Megan Orbon single.

Besides Brown's three-hit effort, Bonavita was 2-4 with a pair of runs to extend her hitting streak to seven games.  Freshmen Michele Franey (Abington, Mass.) and Katelyn Elie (Worcester, Mass.) each had two hits in the nightcap as AIC outhit Assumption 12-6.  Sara Swepston (Dallas, Pa.) picked up her third straight win, scattering six hits in a complete game effort while fanning two.  Caitlin Stazinski took the loss for the Greyhounds.

AIC staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth in the first game when Kayla Donnelly (Pittsfield, Mass.) led off the inning with a single and scored on a double by Deanna Zanetti (Hampden, Mass.).  Assumption would answer in the bottom of the frame as Stefanie Capone homered to right, and the ‘Hounds would plate the winning run in the fifth when a two-out double by Meghan DiVitto plated Kara Lyons, who led off the inning by walking.

Bonavita was 2-3 in the opener, while Melissa Bowman collected a pair of hits for Assumption.  Elizabeth Mucica earned the win by fanning three in 5.1 innings of work before turning things over to Lauren Symonick, who hurled 1.2 hitless innings for the save.  Sara Puglisi (Amsterdam, N.Y.) was charged with the loss, fanning three while walking four in her complete game effort.

AIC hosts Merrimack Thursday afternoon at 3:00 in a Northeast-10 doubleheader.
