Softball Squeezes Past Merrimack in Season Finale 7-6

Springfield, Mass. (May 1, 2007) - Brittany Provost (Delanson, N.Y.) scored on a wild-pitch with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to help lead American International College to a 7-6 extra-inning Northeast-10 softball victory over Merrimack Tuesday afternoon. This was the final contest of the year for the Yellow Jackets who improved to 23-24-1 overall and 15-12-1 in the Northeast-10. The loss drops the Warriors to 20-18 overall and 17-11 in the Northeast-10   

AIC jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the game. The Jackets grabbed their first run when Teresa Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) singled and stole second, later scoring on a Tara DeMontier (Amesbury, Mass.) single. The next three AIC batters reached and all scored when Katelyn Elie (Worcester, Mass.) hammered a double down the line, pushing the lead to four runs.            

The Yellow Jackets scored one more time in regulation when Deanna Zanetti (Hampden, Mass.) belted a solo home run in the third inning.

The Warriors tied the game scoring four runs in the top-half of the fifth inning and nodding the game at five in the top of the seventh. Merrimack eventually grabbed a 6-5 lead when Felicia Astorino crushed a solo home-run in the top of the eighth.

AIC stormed back in their half of the eighth. Sarah Mead (Great Barrington, Mass.) singled to start off the inning and was pushed to third on a Provost single. Mead tied the game after Bonavita ripped her second hit of the contest into left-field. After Merrimack Intentionally walked Demontier, Provost came in to score with Kellie Brown (Gill. Mass.) at the plate after a wild pitch from Courtney Wheeler who took the loss for the Warriors.

Sara Swepston (Dallas, Pa.) came in and pitched one inning earning her eighth win of the season for the Yellow Jackets.
