Softball Swept at Stonehill

Easton, Mass. - The American International College softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at Stonehill Tuesday, falling 4-1 in game-one and 4-2 in game-two. The Skyhawks improved to 17-11 on the season and 8-5 in the Northeast-10, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 14-19 overall and 5-13 in conference play. Senior Tara DeMontier (Amesbury, Mass.) was 3 for 7 at the plate with one RBI for AIC.
Stonehill grabbed an early 1-0 lead in game-one as senior Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass.) got on base with a two-out single in the bottom of the first innings and scored on a double off the bat of Young (). The Skyhawks then added three runs in the fourth, all unearned, to take a 4-0 lead.
AIC got on the board in the top of the seventh after senior Kayla Donnelly (Pittsfield, Mass.) singled to start the inning and later scored on a throwing error by senior Stephanie Folan (Glen Cove, N.Y.), but junior Katie Mottau (Woonsocket, R.I.) got each of the next two batter to ground out and end the game.
The Yellow Jackets trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the third of game-two and knotted the score when junior Kellie Brown (Gill, Mass.) scored on DeMontier's double, but Stonehill answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead for good at 3-1. One run scored on junior Kate Brides' (West Bridgewater, Mass.) sac fly and the other was on a single to center field from Rappoli.
AIC got one of those runs back in the fourth as senior Tara Gorenc (Southwick, Mass.) singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a single off the bat of sophomore Michelle Franey (Abington, Mass.) to make it a 3-2 contest. The Skyhawks capped the scoring in the sixth when Rappoli scored from third on a wild pitch for the 4-2 final.
Junior Deanna Zanetti (Hampden, Mass.) was 3 for 3 at the plate in game two for the Yellow Jackets, while Brown and DeMontier had two hits each. Rappoli and Young each went 3 for six on the afternoon for Stonehill.
Mottau picked up the win in game-one after allowing just two hits with six strikeouts and senior Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass.) was the winner in game-two after allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings. Sophomore Sara Swepston (Dallas, Pa.) took the loss in game one after allowing two earned runs on seven hits and junior Sara Puglisi (Amsterdam, N.Y.) took the game-two loss after allowing four runs on five hits in five innings.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday when they host a
Northeast-10 doubleheader against Saint Michael's at 1 p.m.
