Softball Swept By Merrimack on the Road

Boxscore Game 1 - Boxscore Game 2

Springfield, Mass. - Despite a four RBI day that included a pair of homeruns from senior Tara DeMontier (Amesbury, Mass.) the American International College softball team suffered a road sweep at the hands of the Merrimack Warriors Thursday afternoon. In game one, Merrimack won 7-3 before grabbing an 8-5 game two victory. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast-10. The win propels the Warriors to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

In the first game the Jackets grabbed the contest's first run in the top half of the fourth inning when DeMontier crushed a solo homerun to left center field. Despite the lead, AIC surrendered five runs in the bottom of the fourth and were never able to recover.

The Yellow Jackets added two more scorers in the sixth cutting the deficit to 6-3 when DeMontier singled with the bases loaded and freshman Maggie Anderson (South Grafton, Mass.) drew a walk with the bases still juiced.

The Yellow Jackets gave up one more run in the bottom of the seventh, leaving the game a 7-3 loser. Junior Sara Puglisi (Amsterdam, N.Y.) pitched four and two third innings giving up six runs on 10 hits for AIC. Junior Ashley Deegan (Madison, Conn.) cleaned up the rest, tossing one and a third innings, giving up one run on one hit.

In the second game, it was Merrimack who jumped out to the early lead scoring once in the first inning. AIC nodded the game at a run apiece when Anderson doubled, scoring Katie Elie (Worcester, Mass.), who walked to lead off the second inning. The Yellow Jackets climbed into the lead in the third when DeMontier cracked her second homerun of the afternoon.

Merrimack pushed across a run in the fourth and one in the fifth to earn a one run lead going into the sixth. In the sixth inning, AIC scored three times to go ahead 5-4. DeMontier earned the only RBI of the frame, as the Yellow Jackets totaled two unearned runs.

Merrimack notched four runs in their at bat in the sixth, earning an 8-5 lead they would not relinquish.

Sara Swepston (Dallas, Pa.) pitched the full six innings for AIC. The Yellow Jackets will travel to Le Moyne April 5th for a 1:00 pm start.
