AIC Sweeps Molloy in Double Header
Rockville Centre, NY - Junior Sara Puglisi (Amsterdam,
NY) pitched five innings surrendering only four hits and two runs
while both freshman Katie Elie (Worcester, Mass.) and junior Ashley
Deegan (Manison, Conn.) knocked home three RBIs as AIC downed
Molloy College 12-2 in game one and Junior Deanna Zanetti (Hampden,
Mass.) knocked home four RBIs in a wild game two that saw the
Yellow Jackets earn a 16-15 victory and the afternoon sweep.
The Yellow Jackets improve to 7-4 overall on the year while Molly falls to 5-7 overall on the season.
In the first game, AIC grabbed the contest's first two runs in the second inning when Tara Gorenc (Southwick, Mass.) singled to right field with Deegan on third and sophomore Nicole Beniot (Walpole, Mass.) on second base.
The Yellow Jackets earned three in the third. Senior Kayla Donnelly (Pitssfield, Mass.) singled to third base with one out. Senior Tara DeMonteir (Amesbury, Mass.) then followed with another base hit advancing Donnelly to second. Deanna Zanetti (Hampden, Mass.) followed by drilling a single through the left side loading the bases. Ellie then grabbed the first of her three RBIs singling up the middle. Deegan stood next, slapping a double to right field, giving AIC a 5-0 cushion.
After a two run fourth the Jackets earned a five run fifth putting the game out reach. Michelle Franey (Abington, Mass.) and Zanetti each notched RBIs while Ellie totaled two more in a big fifth.
In game two, sophomore Sara Swepston (Dallas, Pa.) pitched four and third innings giving up 11 runs and Megan Nickerson (Greenfield, Mass.) tossed three and two third innings giving up four runs while earning the win.
AIC struck first in the first, but the Lions came back and grabbed a two run lead after scoring five runs on two hits, making the score 5-3 going into the second inning. The Yellow Jackets came back with three runs in the second but gave up two in the third, falling behind 7-6 after three.
Molloy combined for seven scores over the fifth and sixth inning while AIC posted a monster seven run sixth pulling within a run at 14-13. In the sixth, the pitcher, Swepston earned two RBIs, drilling a single with two runners on. Junior Kellie Brown (Gill, Mass.) also lifted two RBIs with one swing, doubling to right center with another pair on board.
The game, which was a shoot out came down to the seventh inning. With AIC clinging to a 16-15 advantage and the Lions having loaded the bases and scoring a run, Amanda Havdogloud was called for interference trying to advance to second, ending the threat and the game.
