SHARMION SELMAN NAMED FIRST KODAK/WBCA ALL-AMERICAN IN AIC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HISTORY
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (March 21, 2006) – Senior forward
Sharmion Selman (Burlington, Vt.) of the American
International College women’s basketball team became the
first player in program history to be named to the 10-member
Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association (WBCA)
All-America Team announced Tuesday evening at the banquet in
conjunction with the NCAA Division II Elite Eight at the Hot
Springs Convention Center. The announcement was made by WBCA CEO
Beth Bass.
Selman, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Northeast Regional as the Yellow Jackets captured the tournament crown to advance to this week’s Elite Eight, is averaging 16.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game this season for the 24-7 Yellow Jackets, who face No. 8 Emporia State at 3:00 EST Wednesday afternoon, and ranks second in the NE-10 in rebounding and third in scoring. Selman has registered 14 double-doubles this season and reached double figures in scoring 29 times and scored at least 20 points nine times. She earned Northeast-10 Player of the Week twice this season and is an 12-time Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll selection. Selman was a Daktronics Second Team All-Region selection in 2005. Earlier this season, Selman became just the seventh player in Northeast-10 history to receive First Team All-Conference honors three times.
A two-time Kodak/WBCA All-America Honorable Mention and a All-Northeast Region selection by Kodak/WBCA and Daktronics this season, Selman ranks as the No. 2 scorer in AIC history behind AIC’s other three-time First Team All-Conference pick, Juana Garcia (1992-96) with 1,919 points. She has grabbed 983 rebounds, good for fourth place, and her 88 blocked shots place her tied for seventh in school history in that category. She has reached double figures in scoring 106 times in 121 career games and has posted 38 career double-doubles while the Yellow Jackets have gone a combined 86-36 (.705) over her four seasons with three NCAA Tournament berths and a trip to the Elite Eight this season.
