Women's Basketball Wins Fourth Straight with 57-46 Victory at Saint Rose
Albany, N.Y. - The American International College women's
basketball team registered its fourth consecutive victory after
defeating the College of Saint Rose 57-46 Saturday afternoon in
Albany. The Yellow Jackets improved to 15-9 on the season and 11-8
in the Northeast-10, while the Golden Knights dropped to 11-13
overall and 8-12 in conference play. Junior guard Jeannette
Johnathan (Central Islip, N.Y.) scored a team-best 16
points on 5 of 8 shooting from the field and a 4 for 4 performance
beyond the arc for AIC.
The Yellow Jackets opened the game with an 8-3 run but found themselves trailing 23-22 with 1:52 remaining in the first half. AIC closed the period with a 7-2 run to take a 29-25 lead at halftime. Each of the Yellow Jackets final seven points of the first half were scored at the free throw line.
The score remained close for the five minutes of the second half before AIC blew the game open with a 17-2 run that was capped off with a layin from senior center Mirlande Francois (Miami, Fla.) to give the Yellow Jackets a 53-35 lead with 6:23 left in the game.
Junior forward Stacy Boisvert (Agawam, Mass.) also scored in double-figures for AIC with 12 points to go with six rebounds and two steals. Senior forward Alexis Castro (Chula Vista, Calif.) just missed her 11th double-double of the season with nine points and 10 boards and is now 29 points shy of becoming AIC's 17th 1,000-point scorer. Sophomore forward Kristen Boesenberg (Pocono Pines, Pa.) also netted nine points after draining three straight 3-pointers during AIC's 17-2 run and grabbed five rebounds off the bench.
Junior guard Dana Brown (Elmont, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points in the losing effort for Saint Rose and senior guard/forward Emily Gottstein (Albany, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.
AIC held a 20-14 advantage in points in the paint and had a 16-2 edge in second chance scoring thanks to grabbing a season-best 24 offensive rebounds. The Yellow Jackets outrebounded Saint Rose 52-41 for the game.
AIC will next host Pace Tuesday at Butova Gymnasium in a 5:30
p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
