Women's Basketball Drops 66-61 Decision at Assumption
Worcester, Mass. - The American International College
women's basketball team dropped a 66-61 decision at Assumption
Wednesday evening at Laska Gym. The Greyhounds improved to 17-5 on
the season and 11-4 in the Northeast-10, while the Yellow Jackets
fell to 11-8 overall and 8-7 in conference play. Senior forward
Alexis Castro (Chula Vista, Calif.) scored 20
points and grabbed eight boards in the loss and surpassed 1,500
points for her collegiate career.
Castro entered the game with 1,499 career points and wasted no time in reaching the milestone as she canned a jumper 16 seconds into the game to tie the game at 2-2. She now has 1,519 career points, 873 of which have been scored as a Yellow Jacket. Castro scored 646 points in two seasons at Division I Vermont before transferring to AIC last year.
Freshman guard Molly Griffiths (Walpole, Mass.) led three Assumption players in double figures with 18 points, while junior guard Bethany Plasski (Fall River, Mass.) and sophomore guard Kayla Parker (Sanford, Maine) added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Senior forward Charde Floyd (Worcester, Mass.) added nine points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Junior forward Stacy Boisvert (Agawam, Mass.) also scored in double figured for the Yellow Jackets with 10 points and graduate student Alissa Rubino (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added six points and dished out seven assists.
The Greyhounds opened the game on a 13-3 run over the first 3:07 of the game, but AIC closed the opening period with a 19-6 run to take a 38-36 lead into the locker room.
The Yellow Jackets trailed 52-49 with 7:29 left in the game before going on a 7-0 run to take a 58-52 lead with 4:32 remaining in the contest. Assumption answered with a 14-3 run of its own to close the game and record the win.
Assumption outscored AIC 17-2 in second chance points and went 15 for 21 at the free throw line, while the Yellow Jackets were just 7 for 13 at the line.
AIC returns to action Saturday when it hosts Merrimack at 1:30
p.m. in a Northeast-10 contest.
