Southern Connecticut Tops Women's Lacrosse
New Haven, Conn. - The American
International College women's lacrosse team fell to 0-6 on the
season and 0-3 in the Northeast-10 after suffering a 20-8 loss at
Southern Connecticut Tuesday afternoon. The Owls' victory was their
first of the season, bringing their record to 1-4 overall and 1-1
in conference play. Senior Caitlin Mooney (Wilbraham,
Mass.) scored four goals with two assists for the Yellow
Jackets.
Southern Connecticut scored each of the first three goals of the game, including back-to-back markers from freshman Rachel Carlucci (Franklin, Mass.), before Mooney got AIC on the board 8:15 into the game. The Owls then scored four of the next five goals to take a 7-2 lead with 16:44 left in the first half, but two consecutive goals from Mooney pulled the Yellow Jackets back within three goals, 7-4, with 12:44 left in the period.
Sophomore Teresa Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y.) answered with two straight scores of her own to trigger a 7-1 run for Southern Connecticut to close out the first half, giving the Owls a 14-5 advantage at halftime.
Monfredo netted a game-high five goals, while Carlucci and junior Grace Martha (Cheshire, Conn.) added three goals and one assist each for Southern Connecticut. Junior Jessica Scearbo (Arlington, Mass.) added a pair of goals for the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore Lisa Corso (North Belmore, N.Y.) made seven saves in 44:12 to record the win in goal for Southern Connecticut, while freshman Gina Gallo (Westfield, Mass.) stopped 12 shots in goal for AIC.
The Yellow Jackets return to action when they host Saint
Michael's Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
