Women's Lacrosse Loses 19-15 Thriller at Assumption
Worcester, Mass. - The American International College women's
lacrosse team fell to host Assumption in a 19-15 shootout Wednesday
night. The Greyhounds improved to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the
Northeast-10 with their first win of the season, while the Yellow
Jackets dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play. Senior
Alexis Castro (Chula Vista, Calif.) recorded
career-highs of five goals and six points for AIC.
The Greyhounds led 12-7 after junior Shannon Howard's (Norfolk, Mass.) converted on a free position attempt 3:02 into the second half before AIC went on a six-goal run to take its first lead of the game, 13-12, at the 10:30 mark of the second stanza.
Senior Caitlin Mooney (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored four of her game-high six goals during that span, including three consecutive goals in a span of 1:35, and Castro recorded two of her five goals in that run.
Senior Jenna Goldstein (Duxbury, Mass.) tied the game off the ensuing draw control and Kelley game Assumption the lead for good 31 seconds later at 14-13.
The Yellow Jackets were still within a goal, 16-15, after Castro's fifth and final goal of the game with 6:21 remaining in the contest, but the Greyhounds ended the game on a three-goal run to put the game away.
Goldstein finished with a team-best six points, scoring four goals and adding two assists. Howard, sophomore Emily Morrell (Bethany, Conn.) and freshman Becca Kelley (Westfield, Mass.) also scored four goals each for Assumption.
Senior Lauren Matysiak (Holden, Mass.) recorded 15 saves to register the win in goal for Assumption, while freshman Gina Gallo (Westfield, Mass.) made 23 stops, 17 of which came in the first half, in taking the loss for AIC.
The game was tied at five-all after senior Katie Warner (Westfield, Mass.) scored on a free position shot for the Yellow Jackets with 7:03 remaining in the first half, but Assumption tallied five of the last six goals of the opening period, including back-to-back markers from Kelley, to take a 10-6 lead at the half.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday when they host
Georgian Court Saturday at 3 p.m. at John Homer Miller Field
