Women's Lacrosse Falls to Norwich
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American International College women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-9 decision to Norwich Saturday afternoon at John Homer Miller Field. The Cadets improved to 1-1 overall, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 0-5. Senior Caitlin Mooney (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored six goals with one assist for AIC.
The Yellow Jackets trailed 6-5 after Mooney's third goal of the game with 3:50 remaining in the first half before sophomore Ally Daniels (Concord, N.H.) started a five-goal run for Norwich with 1:25 left in the opening frame. Senior Katie Magnus (Waterbury, Vt.) capped the run at the 21:32 mark of the second half, giving the Cadets an 11-5 lead.
Mooney answered with three straight goals in a span of 2:34 to pull AIC back within three, 11-8, but Norwich netted eight of the final nine goals for the 17-9 final.
Daniels scored five goals with three assists for a game-high eight points while registering six draw controls, five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Kathleen Hennessy (Essex Junction, Vt.) added three goals and two assists for five points.
Freshman Erin McGaffigan (Groton, Mass.) made nine saves in recording the first win of her collegiate career for the Cadets, while fellow freshman Gina Gallo (Westfield, Mass.) registered 16 stops for AIC.
The Yellow Jackets return to action when they travel to Southern
Connecticut Tuesday for a 4 p.m. Northeast-10 contest.
