Gauvine Named Most Outstanding Wrestler; AIC Places Third at Southern Maine Invitational
Portland, Maine - The American International College wrestling team placed third of ten teams at Southern Maine's Ted Reese Invitational. Sophomore Sam Gauvine (Enfield, Conn.) won the individual title at 141 pounds and was named the Invitational's Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Gauvine, who was seeded third, dominated each of his four opponents. He recorded a 20-2 technical fall over Trinity's Cameron Reed and majored Bridgewater State's Jack Attaya, 17-6, in the quarterfinals. Gauvine then avenged a loss to Merchant Marine's James Besheda at the Doug Parker Invitational with a pin fall in 5:11 in the semifinals before posting an 11-5 decision over Southern Maine's Matt Ulrich in the 141 final.
Junior Jeff Haddad (Old Saybrook, Conn.) was seeded second at 133 pounds and won each of his three matches to placed first in his weight class. After receiving a first round bye he defeated Southern Maine's Anthony Moriarty, 9-2, and pinned Bridegwater State's John Scalise in 3:27 to advance to the 133 title bout where he won a 7-4 decision over Plymouth State's Shawn Moseley.
Sophomore John Mullinix (Baltimore, Md.) placed third at 165 pounds after pinning Plymouth State's Donny Connolly in 3:35. He also pinned teammate Adrian Gonzalez (Groton, Conn.) in 1:06 earlier in the day. Yaakov Bloch (Ashkelon, Isreal) placed third at 184 pounds after majoring Arizona's Tom McCarrick, 14-6. He also recorded a major decision over Bridgewater State's Sean Swett in the consolation semifinals.
Graduate student Dan Dalle-Molle (Kotzbue, Alaska) placed third in the heavyweight bracket after beating teammate Tim Rustek (Portland, Conn.) 7-3 in the consolation final. Both advanced to the championship bracket semifinals before falling into the consolation bracket.
The Yellow Jackets will next compete at Dec. 8's STCC Invitational.
