AIC Splits Double-Dual Meet

SPRINGFIELD, Ma - The American International College wrestling team brought its record to 4-6 after beating Southern Maine, 21-18, and losing to Plymouth State, 23-18, at Butova Gymnasium Friday night.  Graduate student Dan Dalle-Molle (Kotzebue, Alaska) recorded two victories, defeating sophomore Dan McLean (Norway, Maine) of Southern Maine and freshman Rob McAviney (Cheshire, Conn.) of Plymouth State on senior night.

In the first match of the night against Southern Maine, freshman Carlos Lara (Avon, Conn.) defeated freshman John Heinstadt (Duxbury, Mass.) in the 125 lb. weight class by technical fall, 18-2, in 4:27.  At 133 lbs., junior Jeff Haddad (Old Saybrook, Conn.) defeated junior Steve Valastro (Montgomery, N.Y.), who was ranked 10th nationally, 9-4.  Sophomore Sam Gauvine (Enfield, Conn.) beat sophomore Matt Ulrich (Garfield, N.J.), 8-7, thanks to a 1:18 riding time advantage.  In the 174 lb. weight class, sophomore Nick Laurino (Merrick, N.Y) majored junior Jeff Warren (Kensington, N.H.), 14-1. Freshman Yaakov Bloch (Askelon, Israel) also received a victory in the first match, beating freshman Jesse Rayworth (North Berwick, Me.) 8-5.

In the second match of the night, Haddad received his second victory beating junior Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, N.H) 9-4.  Gauvine also got his second victory of the evening, pinning freshman Dan Saia (Merrimack, N.H.) in 1:43.  At 157 lbs., sophomore Martin Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) beat freshman Mark Watts (Bedford, N.H.) 8-6.

Next up, the Yellow Jackets will take on Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Bridgewater State Feb. 9 in Worcester.
