Wrestling Beats Division I Wagner, Falls To Gardner Web In Tri-Meet

Staten Island, N.Y. - The American International College wrestling team went 1-1 in a tri-meet at Division I Wagner, defeating the host Seahawks, 19-18, and falling to Gardner-Webb, 24-18. Junior 133-pounder Jeff Haddad (Old Saybrook, Conn.) recorded a win by pinfall over the Bulldogs' Rob Tate and defeated Wagner's Nick Boghos, 3-1.

Senior heavyweight Dan Dalle-Molle (Kotzebue, Alaska) sophomore 157-pounder Martin Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and freshman 125-pounder Carlos Lara (Avon, Conn.) were also 2-0 on the day. Dalle-Molle pinned Gardner-Webb's Windell Wilson in 1:59 and then posted a 3-1 decision over the Seahawks' John Graeffe.

Thompson registered a 5-3 win over the Bulldog's Austin Reece and then beat Wagner's Sean Quinn, 4-1. Lara opened the day with a 10-3 victory over Thomas Bennett of Gardner-Webb and then majored the Seahawks' Joe Eurell, 17-5.

Sophomore 141-pounder Sam Gauvine (Enfield, Conn.) was on the short end of a 4-3 triple overtime loss to Chas Franz of Gardner Webb. The bout was still tied at 3-3 after the third overtime and the match was decided by riding time after the third OT. Gauvine rebounded to defeat Wagner's Mike Tutunjian, 12-7. Sophomore 174-pounder Nick Laurino (Merrick, N.Y.) was also a winner against the Seahawks, defeating Peter Morano 9-5.

AIC will next compete at the NCAA Eastern Regionals, hosted by Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Feb. 29-March 1.
