Wrestling Beats Host WPI, Falls to Bridgewater State

Worcester, Mass - The American International College wrestling team defeated Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 33-15, and dropped a 22-18 decision to Bridgewater State in a tri-meet hosted by the Engineers. The Yellow Jackets now have a dual match record of 5-7 on the season. Junior Jeff Haddad (Old Saybrook, Conn.) registered two victories for AIC.

In their first match of the day against the Bears, the Yellow Jackets won each of the first three bouts, but Bridgewater State answered by winning five of the last six to take the win. Haddad defeated senior Eric Coughlan (Sandwich, Mass.), 3-1, and sophomore Sam Gauvine (Enfield, Conn.) recorded a technical fall over fellow sophomore Jack Attaya (Milton, Mass.), 22-6, in 5:42.

AIC took an 18-15 lead in the match after freshman Yaakov Bloch (Ashkelon, Isreal) majored freshman Sean Swett (Hardwich, Mass.), 15-7, but senior James Quinlan (Methuen, Mass.) answered by majoring Morgan Wanzer (Enfield, Conn.), 10-1, and senior Tim Ferreira (Danbury, Conn.) defeated graduate student Dan Dalle-Molle (Kotzebue, Alaska) 4-1 to secure the Bears' win.

The Yellow Jackets won three bouts by pin fall in their win over WPI. Haddad pinned sophomore Jeff Root (Milford, Conn.) at 133 lbs. in 2:51, sophomore John Mullinix (Baltimore, Md.) pinned fellow sophomore David Cardenas (Framingham, Mass.) 39 seconds into the second period at 165 lbs. and classmate Nick Laurino (Merrick, N.Y.) stuck freshman John Gikas (North Andover, Mass.) in 1:06 at 174 lbs.

AIC will next face Division I Sacred Heart Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
