WOMEN'S SOCCER ENDS SLIDE WITH SHUTOUT OF NYIT

BOX SCORE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 3, 2006) - Caitlin Mooney (Wilbraham, Mass.) registered a goal and an assist while freshman goalkeeper Kara Potts (Westfield, Mass.) turned away four shots en route to a shutout in her first collegiate game as the American International College women's soccer team defeated New York Institute of Technology 2-0 Sunday afternoon at AIC Park.  The win improves AIC to 1-2-0 on the season, while the Bears are 0-3-0 on the season.

Sunday's win snaps a 17-game winless streak for the Yellow Jackets dating back to last season.  It was a year to the day since their last victory, a 5-2 win over Molloy.  It also marks the first collegiate victory for first-year head coach Matt Johnson, a native of Holyoke, Mass.

AIC would score just 5:24 into the contest when Meghan O'Herron (Springfield, Mass.) played a ball down the middle to Mooney, who made a move on a NYIT defender and shot from 15 yards towards the right post.  Bear goalie Jenna Ament (East Norwich, N.Y.) got a hand on the shot but it deflected into the goal for the 1-0 lead.  The Yellow Jackets would tack on their second goal 6:34 before intermission when Mooney played a ball through the box to her right over to Ashley Padden (Louisville, N.Y.), who put the ball inside the near post for the goal.

Potts (right), a former All-State goalkeeper at Westfield High School, registered four saves for a shutout in her first collegiate game.  Ament finished with six saves, all of those coming over the final 45 minutes.

AIC returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Syracuse, N.Y. to face Le Moyne College in a 4:00 contest.  The next Yellow Jacket home game is Saturday, September 9, when American International hosts UMass Lowell in a 12:00 contest at AIC Park.
