AIC Drops
Northeast-10 match to UMass-Lowell
Springfield, Mass (September 9, 2006).- Despite a
valiant effort that included 11 saves from sophomore goalie
Danielle Hodecker (West Springfield, Mass) and a
goal from senior forward Valantein Burson (Stoughton,
Mass.), AIC fell to UMass-Lowell 3-1 Saturday afternoon at
AIC park. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 1-3-0 overall and
0-3-0 in Northeast-10 play. The win helps the River Hawks remain
undefeated in Northeast-10 play improving them 3-0-0 and 3-1-2
overall.
UMass-Lowell started the scoring
early in the first half when senior forward Tricia
Auld broke through the Yellow Jackets defense and chipped
in a break away goal (5:46) just over Hodecker’s outreached
arms.
The Yellow Jackets had a difficult time keeping the River Hawks away from corner kicks and it cost them 5:56 into the second-half when sophomore Grace Larsen fired a corner-kick through the AIC defense right onto the toe of senior Kristin Mahoney who found the back of the net. The goal made the score 2-0. AIC was out-shot from the corner 7-0.
UMass-Lowell would score one more time when senior Jamie Lynn Cathcart punched a header into the net from a beautiful placed pass from Auld.
Although the River Hawks spent a majority of the time on their end of the field, the Yellow Jackets became aggressive with about 13 minutes to go in the game. With only 2:55 remaining on the clock Burson put a shot on net from 15 feet out that sailed over the goalie and into the net, putting the Yellow Jackets on the board.
AIC will resume Northeast-10 play
September 12 when they visit Pace.
