Women's Soccer Wins First NE-10 Contest of 2007

Boxscore

Springfield, Mass. - Senior Joanne Germano (West Springfield, Mass.) scored a goal and tallied two assists as the American International College women's soccer team earned its first victory in the Northeast-10 this season, 5-3, over Pace Tuesday evening, at Leary Field on campus at Elms College.

For the Jackets, it was their first win in over two years in conference play, after having gone 0-14 in the Northeast-10 in 2006 and 0-13-1 in 2005.

AIC improved to 3-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Northeast-10 following the win while the Setters dropped to 2-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference.

Pace's leading goal scorer Tiffany Robinson scored the contest's first goal after receiving a penalty-kick for being tripped-up in the box on a breakaway. The goal was scored at the 5:34 mark in the first-half and was one of two goals that the electric Robinson would notch on the evening.

The Jacket's retaliated by scoring four goals in a matter of eight minutes starting just after the 28 minute mark in the first-stanza. Sarah Boornazian (Farmington, Conn.) scored the team's first goal after blasting home a feed from Germano right out in front of the net.

Germano would earn another assist after setting up a Morgan Mastronardi (Corunna, Ontario) goal just under four minutes after the Jacket's initially got on the board.

AIC out-shot the Settlers 17-10 and controlled the tempo for a majority of the game

Lindsey Wolfe (Westfield, Mass.) scored three minutes later on a shot taken with her off-foot from about 15 yards out. Freshman Nikki Gode was credited with an assist on the score

Colleen Hilliker (Williamsville, NY) continued AIC's onslaught just under a minute later when she took a pass from the right side of the field from fellow freshman Cassie Ashwell (Agawam, Mass.), dribbled the ball, and shot a well-placed shot past Pace goalie Alena D'Agostino, who was pulled at the end of the first-half.

Pace would not go down quietly in the second-half pulling within one goal before AIC put it away late in the frame.

Dania D'Alessandro scored midway through the second-half for the Settlers when she took a great pass from the left-hash mark from Amy Rinehart and smacked it past a helpless Danielle Hodecker (West Springfield, Mass.). Hodecker recorded four saves between the pipes on the evening.

The Settlers continued to threaten pulling the score as close as 4-3 when just under a minute after the D'Alessandro goal Robinson struck again, sneaking through the AIC defense off of the kick-off and striking home a breakaway goal.

The team's battled through the last 15 minutes of the game before Germano was able to shut the door scoring the team's fifth goal with the clock showing exactly three minutes to play in the game.

AIC will travel to Smithfield, Rhode Island to take on Bryant September 13th, under the lights, at 7:00 pm.
