Women's Soccer Edged by Southern Connecticut 2-1
Springfield, Mass. - Joanne Germano (West Springfield,
Mass.) posted her 11th goal of the season despite the
Yellow Jackets 2-1 Northeast-10 setback to the visiting Owls of
Southern Connecticut Saturday afternoon at AIC Park.
The first goal of the contest wasn't scored until the second-half of regulation. Southern's Katrina Cook dribbled the ball around AIC goaltender Kara Potts (Westfield, Mass.) inside of the box, striking the ball into an empty net after receiving a pass from teammate Jennifer Petrillo, making the score 1-0.
Potts turned away six shots in net on the afternoon while Owls goalie Katie Didio stopped five shots between the pipes for Southern.
The Owls took a 2-0 lead at the 62:41 mark in second-stanza when Erin Conrad took a terrific feed from Virginia Hyman from the left-side of the field on a crossing pass and tapped the ball into the net.
Southern out-shot the Yellow Jacket's 16-9 in the game and held a close 4-3 advantage in corner-kicks.
The AIC offensive showed determination just under six minutes after Southern's second goal when Germano took a corner-kick pass from Cassie Ashwell (Feeding Hill, Mass.) and headed it into the back of the net, cutting the deficit in half.
Despite several scoring chances, AIC was unable to find an equalizer, dropping a tough 2-1 decision.
The win moves Southern Connecticut to 5-4-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the Northeast-10 while the loss drops the Jacket's to 6-7 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
The Jacket's will take on Stonehill College at Lusitano Stadium
Tuesday October 2nd. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
